Tuning forks were originally created, unsurprisingly, to be used as a tool to tune instruments đš. While they are still used for their original purpose today, they have also evolved into powerful tools 𧰠in their own right used in the realm of sound healing đĽ. Similar to how acupuncture releases âenergy blockagesâ to enhance vitality, tuning forks are used instead of needles đ to ensure a smooth flow of energy đ through vibrational frequencies. They may be used near the body (in the biofield) or placed directly on the affected body part.
Sound Healing
In case youâre unfamiliar with Sound Healing, it is a therapeutic modality that uses sound đ to interact with the human body to effect change on a physical, mental, emotional, and/or energetic level. Intentionally or not, sound and music đľ have been used by humans for thousands of years for everything from meditation đ§ to relaxation to celebration đĽł. Borrowing from the ancient Chinese and Ayurvedic ideas of life energy known as Qi or prana, respectively, sound healing is thought to work to keep this life energy flowing smoothly.
One important set of frequencies used in sound therapy is known as the Solfeggio frequencies. You may know them as the âDo-Re-Miâ đź scale. These frequencies are believed to have powerful healing properties and, as such, are commonly used in tuning forks to target specific chakras đ or energy centers in the body.
Types of Tuning Forks
There are two different types of tuning forks: weighted and unweighted, as well as different frequencies available within each type.
Weighted tuning forks have small circular weights đď¸ââď¸ attached to the prongs, which create longer-lasting reverberations. These forks are perfect for using in direct application on the body because they produce a stronger vibration đł that can reach deep into our muscles and tissues. A 128 Hz fork is commonly used for bodywork.
To use a weighted tuning fork on the body, first strike the weighted end with a rubber tipped mallet and then place the bottom of the handle directly on the body part đŚśyou would like to address. Wait until the reverberations are no longer felt, remove the fork from the body, strike it again and repeat the process. I like to do about 3 rounds per body part. Use consistently for best results.

Unweighted tuning forks create a gentler vibration and a more distinct tone, which makes them ideal for working with the body's energy field đ. Many practitioners prefer a tuning fork set that includes multiple forks with different frequencies for a broader range of applications.
Unweighted tuning forks are often used in the biofield, the energetic space that surrounds each human body đ¤. These forks are typically used by practitioners on their clients but may also be enjoyed for their sound healing qualities. Simply strike the forked end and listen to the pure vibrational sound ă°ď¸until it fades. Repeat as desired.
To choose the appropriate tuning fork, think about your goals đ and preferences. Weighted forks are best for direct use on the body đ§, whereas unweighted forks are most appropriate for working within the body's energy field.
